Colonizing the Muslim Mind
Historically, Muslims had never accepted riba as normal, and certainly not as permissible. Colonialism was at the root of this change. Like other wrongs that entered the Ummah, riba came in slowly at first. But, ironically, it was quickly ushered in by the Muslims themselves. Imran Khan cites Sartre when writing about this transformation among elites in the Subcontinent in “Warrior Race.” We can draw similar parallels to the conventional banking industry in the Muslim world and ask ourselves, “Do I accept riba as something normal?”: “The idea was to create a class that was Indian but would speak, behave and think like Englishmen, and represent the interests of the British in the subcontinent. Jean-Paul Sartre, in his book ‘The Wretched of the Earth,’ writes: ‘In the 19th century golden age of colonization we used to bring African, Asian and Latin American pseudo free thinkers to Europe and walk them around Lisbon, Paris, London and Amsterdam. After a few months of having amused them with learning a few gestures, dancing, slight change of accent, modern living and various imitations, we would send them back to their own lands. Upon return these people would recognize themselves as superior races and would assume a mission of power with a loudspeaker, that is, they would parrot to their people what we had taught them. These individuals were not only the colonizers, cream of the crop, but also they were a bridge for transferring our wishes to their native people.’” (Warrior Race) As Sheikh Nuh Keller writes, “…the traveller on the spirtiual path must disregard all so-called ‘fatwas’ or ‘formal legal opnions’ that declare any form of usury (riba) to be lawful. Such opinions are the product of a psychologically defeated and humiliated Islam that emerged after colonization of Muslim lands and abolishment of the social and political manifestation of the Sacred Law.”
