How I Left Riba

During the months leading up to and following my undergraduate degree, I had a great amount of difficulty finding a job.

This was despite significant effort put into job applications and significant time spent preparing for interviews. This weighed very heavily on me as I had recently married and needed a way to support myself and my family.

Finally, I received a call from the hiring manager of one of the local banks who had come across my resume on a recruitment site and was looking for a software developer. He offered me a job over the phone.

On the one hand I was very happy to have received a job offer and a competitive salary, but on the other, I remembered reading hadiths relating to giving, taking and recording transactions involving interest (riba), and worried that by working as a software developer for such a company, I might fall under the third category (of recording such transactions) and still be engaged in the haram. So I declined the job.

Shortly after, I received two other job offers via telephone within minutes of each other, both for companies that weren't directly engaged in the haram as their primary means of doing business. This experience taught me something about the importance of having patience and tawakkul regarding one’s rizq.

However, something else interesting happened: just three years later, I received news that the bank that had initially offered me a job collapsed and was seized by federal regulators. This was one of the most expensive bank failures in United States history and made it firm in my mind that there was not only a next-worldly benefit in avoiding riba but also a this-worldly benefit.
